CHOICES
Using a travel agency is based on several factors: complexity of the trip, need for information, and coordination of services. While many choose quick internet services like Expedia, Kayak, Orbitz, Priceline, Travelocity, etc for quick weekend trips around the world. These trips only require airplane tickets, a map, a guide, an address, and a taxi to visit major sightseeing attractions in the area. This has nothing to do with the work done by our travel agency. We design inclusive fully researched travel packages allowing you to live more deeply in the city, visit breathtaking surroundings, and fully immerse yourself into the rich history and culture all while providing legal guarantees and protection while traveling abroad.

CASH
The monetary unit is the KYAT (pronounced chat) Biggest note: 10,000 Most Common: 5,000 & 1,000 Small Notes: 500; 200, 100, 90, 50, 20, 15, 10, 5, 1. In large hotels, restaurants, and shops they will have pricing in USD (United States Dollars). The exchange rate is roughly 1,000 KYAT per USD for $100 or $50 notes - 800 KYAT per USD for $20, $10, $5, $1 notes. WHAT DID YOU SAY? Yes there are caveats in exchanging currency in this country including most major banks. All dollars are NOT the same in their minds; the larger notes are worth more than the smaller ones. I know for most travelers this is almost unbelievable but this is unfortunately true as-well-as more limitations you must also be aware. ANY scratches, pen marks, rips, tears, creases, color fading, authentication test marks, or serial numbers starting with CB will NOT be accepted. We strongly insist that you order brand new $100 or $50 USD from your bank up to the maximum customs declaration limit of $10,000 USD [including electronics & jewelry] per person for your visit. (See ATM CARD & CREDIT CARDS below). Other foreign currency including the € Euro is only exchanged at larger institutions in Yangon and not recommended.
ATM CARDS
There are an abundance of ATM machines from different organizations throughout Myanmar (major cities, hotels, and shopping centers). NOTE: All ATM's are not equal. Step 1 You must call your bank and check whether Myanmar (Burma) is still on their sanctions/contested list (unauthorized ATM withdrawal frequently occurs). Step 2 You must call your bank and have them set a "TRAVEL NOTICE" on your account in the months you will be in Myanmar also request an international phone number directly to the claims/authorization department. Step 3 Upon usage of your card, typically after you enter your PIN number, look at the denomination of currency available 10,000 5,000 1,000 and the rate of charge per transaction (typically 3,000 KYAT). Due to the physical limitation of the dispensers you can only get 600,000 ($600 USD) in 10,000 KYAT notes OR 300,000 ($300 USD) in 5,000 KYAT notes per transaction. Each transaction will cost you a processing fee so find the larger note option if you can. We highly encourage obtaining the previously mentioned currency amounts in case your bank denies authorization when you are within the country.
CREDIT CARDS
Myanmar is a cash only country as of May 2015. Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or even EuroPay (EMV) credit cards are NOT accepted anywhere. Slow adoption will occur later in this year but with limited availability countrywide. You have been warned.

History
The earliest discovered pre-homosapien was Pondaung Man in northern Burma dating back to 40 million years ago. Millennia since then, a mixture of Indo-Aryans established their ethnic origins around 700 BC as-well-as Mongolian invaders under Kublai Khan around 1287 AD. King Anawrahta of the Pagan Dynasty (1044-1077 AD) created the first Burmese sovereign independent nation, King Bayinnaung was the second ruler during the Toungoo Dynasty (1551-1581 AD), and King Alaungpaya the third during the Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1760 AD). Through consecutive wars the British, Dutch, and Portuguese in 1612 leading up to the Anglo-Burmese War in 1824–1826, the British East India Company captured all territory south of Cape Negrais (Mawtin Point Irrawaddy Delta). In 1852 Britain annexed lower Burma including Yangon (Rangoon) after the second Anglo-Burmese war to India. From 1885 after the capture and export of King Thibaw, Queen Supaya Latt, and royal family from Mandalay to Ratanagiri through 1937 the entire country was officially annexed to India. By 1937 Britain separated the territory from India and made it an independent crown colony. On May 1942 during WWII, Japanese forces invades and captures a vast majority of the country cutting off the 800-mile Burma Road (Rangoon, Myanmar to Yunnan, China). By August 1945, Allied forces liberated most of Myanmar from Japanese. On January 4th 1948 the country was granted independence with assistance from Indian, Indonesian, Yugoslav, and Egyptian presidents. By 1989, the military junta (government led by a committee of military leaders) officially changed the countries name to unify all outlying territories under one name "The Republic of the Union of Myanmar". In 2010 the junta allowed the country's first democratic elections in 20 years then officially disbanded in March 2011. By January 2012 the U.S. restored full diplomatic relations with MYANMAR.
